Indonesia Reverses Tough Import Restrictions on Migrant Workers Amid Public Backlash

Indonesia has scrapped stringent import limits for goods brought in by its migrant workers, responding to public outcry just two months after implementing the measures.

The regulations, which included strict caps on items like luggage, footwear, and textiles, were initially introduced last year and went into effect on March 10, causing widespread criticism.

The decision to retract these restrictions for Indonesian migrant workers was reached by various ministries on Tuesday, aiming to provide easier solutions for workers sending goods to their families.

Acknowledging the significant contributions of overseas workers to the country’s economy, the Ministry of Trade emphasized the need for fair and convenient import policies.

While the measures were initially intended to prevent abuse of imported goods, they faced backlash over their impact on migrant workers. Benny Rhamdani, head of the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency, criticized the burdens placed on workers and the delays in receiving their goods.

Under the revised policy, there are still tax implications based on the value of imported items, with exemptions for shipments below a certain threshold.
