At the recent International Peace Day event in Juba, South Sudan’s rich cultural diversity was on full display, but it was the nation’s collective yearning for peace and a brighter future that captured the spotlight. Despite ongoing struggles, the people of South Sudan are determined to realize a lasting peace. The celebration was a reminder that peace remains fragile, yet within reach.
The Promise and the Reality of Peace
Everlyne Batista, a South Sudanese performer, expressed what peace has come to mean for her personally. “With peace, I can go to school, I can live without the stress I had before, including losing my relatives. That is the good news of the peace that I am enjoying now, even though everything is not all well. I want peace in South Sudan,” she shared. Her statement reflects a broader sentiment across the nation—people are hopeful, but fully aware that much remains to be done.
While peace may have allowed many to resume their daily lives, political uncertainty casts a long shadow. South Sudan’s leadership recently announced another extension of the transitional government, delaying elections yet again. This decision has caused both frustration and disappointment among peace advocates and the international community. 
The Cost of Delaying Elections
Edmund Yakani, from the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, voiced his frustration, questioning the need for prolonged delays. “We are not suffering because peace requires millions of dollars. We are suffering because we need political leaders to say enough is enough to violence. That doesn’t need one SSP [South Sudanese Pound],” Yakani remarked. His concerns underline the widespread belief that peace is being held back by political will rather than financial constraints.
International partners, including the European Union, have also expressed disappointment. Despite significant financial backing and resources, the lack of political progress has been troubling. Timo Olkkonen, the European Union Ambassador, emphasized that “a transition cannot go on forever,” calling for forward movement in democratization and nation-building efforts. He warned that the repeated extensions risk undermining the credibility of the peace process.
Complexities Behind the Extension
South Sudan’s First Vice-President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, defended the extension, citing several unresolved challenges. He noted that unifying security forces, resettling millions of refugees, resolving intercommunal conflicts, and finalizing the country’s governance system are critical tasks that remain incomplete. Additionally, Machar stressed the importance of conducting elections in a conducive environment, ensuring that citizens can exercise their rights without fear or coercion.
“It is not for being in power. This is true. Many of us would want to see that the people of South Sudan elect their leaders, but in an environment which is conducive for them to exercise their right,” Machar stated. His comments reflect the delicate balance between pushing forward with elections and ensuring stability within the country.
The Role of the International Community
The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Nicholas Haysom, offered a more measured perspective, acknowledging both the risks and opportunities created by the extension. While the delay tests the patience of the South Sudanese people, Haysom noted that it also allows more time for nation-building and electoral preparations.
However, he cautioned that the window of opportunity is narrowing. “Urgency is required. Not a pause,” Haysom stressed. His message was clear: progress must be made to prevent further political instability and ensure a democratic transition.
