Buried Secrets? Experts Dispute Claims of Underground City Beneath Giza Pyramids

A controversial new claim that an extensive underground city lies hidden beneath the Pyramids of Giza has ignited fierce debate among archaeologists and researchers. While some scientists argue that radar scans reveal vast subterranean structures, others insist the findings are exaggerated and lack credible evidence.

A team of Italian researchers, led by Professor Corrado Malanga from the University of Pisa, asserts that satellite-based radar imaging has detected deep vertical shafts, tunnels, and potential water channels beneath the ancient pyramids. They believe the structures, extending more than 2,000 feet (610 meters) underground, could contain the long-rumored Hall of Records—a legendary archive of lost ancient knowledge.

“This could be one of the most significant discoveries in Egyptian history,” Malanga stated during a press briefing in Italy. “The evidence suggests an enormous underground network that has remained hidden for millennia.”

However, many experts remain highly skeptical. Professor Lawrence Conyers, a specialist in ground-penetrating radar from the University of Denver, argues that the technology used in the study is incapable of detecting features at such extreme depths. He describes the claims as “sensationalized,” though he acknowledges the possibility of smaller hidden chambers beneath the pyramids.

Renowned Egyptian archaeologist Dr. Zahi Hawass also dismissed the findings outright. “There is no scientific basis for these claims,” he said, emphasizing that no physical excavation has been conducted to verify the radar data. He warned against spreading unproven theories that mislead the public.

The study, conducted by Malanga and his colleagues Filippo Biondi and Armando Mei, focused primarily on the Khafre Pyramid, part of the famous Giza complex. However, their findings have yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, raising further doubts among experts.

The Pyramids of Giza have long been shrouded in mystery, fueling theories of hidden tombs, secret passageways, and lost civilizations. While the idea of an underground city is compelling, definitive proof remains elusive, and for now, the debate over what truly lies beneath Egypt’s most famous monuments continues.
