Elon Musk Unveils Plans for Implementing Charges on X

Elon Musk

The founder of the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Elon Musk, has revealed intentions to implement charges for all new users who wish to engage with posts. Musk stated that this measure is deemed necessary to combat the proliferation of fake accounts and bots on the platform.

In response to a tweet discussing potential changes to the platform, Musk emphasized that levying a nominal fee for new users to post, like, and reply is the most effective strategy to address the persistent issue of bots. He explained that current artificial intelligence technology, along with troll farms, can easily circumvent existing verification measures.

Musk elaborated on the rationale behind the decision, highlighting how the prevalence of fake accounts not only diminishes user experience but also exhausts the available pool of usernames, making it challenging for genuine users to secure desired handles.

Responding to queries regarding the duration of the proposed fee, Musk clarified that it would apply only during the initial three months after a user joins the platform. He underscored his commitment to combating fake accounts, citing it as a primary objective since assuming control of the platform in late 2022.

However, since Musk’s tenure, several users have noted a surge in spam content, partly attributed to significant staff reductions, particularly within the content moderation team.

The platform’s verification system has also undergone modifications, allowing users to pay for verification, thereby enhancing the visibility of their posts and replies. Some have linked this alteration to the increased prevalence of spam content. Musk has hinted at the possibility of extending fees to all users in the future.

Amidst a decline in advertising revenue due to concerns surrounding Musk’s stance on “absolute free speech” and the platform’s tolerance of controversial content, X has explored subscription models, such as X Premium, to diversify revenue streams.
