Enfinium, a prominent UK energy from waste operator, has unveiled proposals for a groundbreaking £200m carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in North Wales. The initiative aims to integrate CCS technology into its Parc Adfer facility in Deeside.
Pending approval, the project anticipates capturing up to 235,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, thereby significantly contributing to the collective efforts towards achieving net-zero emissions. Enfinium’s proposal seeks grant support through the UK Government’s Track-1 HyNet carbon capture program.
Upon approval, the captured carbon will be transported through the pipeline network currently under development in the region, as part of one of the UK’s initial priority carbon capture clusters. Planning and consenting processes for the Parc Adfer CCS project are slated to commence later this year, with an update expected from the UK Government on progressing projects by summer. 
Established in 2019 through collaboration with the five local authorities comprising the North Wales Residual Waste Treatment Partnership (NWRWTP), Parc Adfer presently diverts up to 232,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste from landfill annually.
Enfinium envisions that, with CCS implementation, Parc Adfer will play a pivotal role in realizing the Welsh Government’s target of achieving 100% zero-carbon power by 2035, while also fostering the creation of over 1,000 jobs during its construction phase.
Mike Maudsley, Enfinium’s CEO, emphasized the significance of deploying carbon capture technology at Parc Adfer, highlighting its potential to transform the facility into Wales’ largest generator of carbon-negative power. This move not only addresses waste decarbonization but also bolsters the green economy in Deeside and across North Wales.
Ben Burggraaf, CEO of Net Zero Industry Wales, underscored the region’s opportunity to leverage innovative technologies like carbon capture and hydrogen to propel sustainable economic development. He emphasized the urgency of advancing projects like Parc Adfer to maintain Wales’ competitive edge in the global market.
Enfinium, with existing waste-to-energy plants in Kent and Yorkshire and two other ongoing projects, continues to drive forward sustainable initiatives in the energy sector.
