EU Defence Industry Pushes for €100 Billion Funding Boost Beyond 2027

As the European Union prepares for its next long-term budget, the bloc’s defence industry is making a bold financial plea: it wants at least €100 billion allocated to defence funding after 2027. Industry leaders and policymakers argue that such an investment is crucial to ensure Europe’s strategic autonomy, modernize military capabilities, and respond effectively to mounting global security threats.

The call comes amid growing geopolitical tensions, particularly with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and rising challenges from rival powers. EU defence firms emphasize that sustained funding is necessary not only to develop cutting-edge technologies such as cyber defence, artificial intelligence, and advanced weaponry but also to strengthen the European Defence Fund and related research initiatives.

“Europe’s security landscape is evolving rapidly,” stated representatives from the defence sector. “To safeguard our freedom and interests, a strong, well-funded defence industry is indispensable.”

Negotiations over the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) post-2027 are expected to be intense, as member states balance defence ambitions with other pressing priorities like climate action, social programs, and digital transformation. Yet, the defence industry’s message is clear: without substantial budget commitments, Europe risks lagging behind in global security and defence innovation.

The upcoming EU budget talks will reveal whether the bloc is ready to back these demands with the financial muscle necessary to secure its future defence capabilities.
