Dubai Grapples with Flooding Havoc as Record Rains Disrupt Emirates Check-Ins

AP

After unprecedented rainfall, Dubai and neighboring areas in the United Arab Emirates are coping with the aftermath, including at least one fatality and significant damage to properties. The storm brought a deluge, with Al Ain, a city bordering Oman, experiencing its highest recorded rainfall since 1949.

Although the downpour has lessened, disruptions persist, prompting Emirates to suspend check-ins for departing passengers from Dubai. Dubai International Airport, a major global hub, reported extensive flight delays and diversions due to the adverse weather conditions, advising travelers against heading to the airport.

The UAE’s limited drainage infrastructure struggles to manage such heavy rainfall, often resulting in submerged roads during rare instances of precipitation. While the UAE occasionally conducts cloud seeding operations to induce rain, officials denied any recent activities preceding the storm, contrary to earlier reports.

The impact extends beyond transportation, with schools ordered to continue online classes as emergency crews clear debris strewn across streets. Local media depict scenes of collapsed infrastructure and inundated homes, highlighting the widespread damage caused by the torrential downpour.

In neighboring Oman, where the rainfall has been particularly severe, the situation is dire, with reports of multiple fatalities, including schoolchildren. Both Oman and the UAE have previously warned of the heightened risk of flooding due to climate change, a factor likely contributing to the intensity of these recent storms, according to climate scientists.
