In a significant change of position, London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has stated that former US President Donald Trump is welcome to visit the UK, despite previously calling for his 2019 state visit to be banned. Speaking to Sky News, Khan emphasized that part of his role as mayor is to advocate for London’s values and interests, even if it means openly challenging world leaders.
Reflecting on his previous strong criticisms of Trump—including labeling him “ignorant” on Islam, “racist,” “sexist,” and a “homophobe”—Sir Sadiq now acknowledges Trump’s second term and urges a focus on his future actions. “Let’s judge President Trump on what he does in his second term rather than dwell on the past,” he remarked.
The mayor also responded to US Vice President JD Vance’s assertion that free speech is under threat in Europe, dismissing the claim and reaffirming the UK’s strong commitment to democratic values. “Woe betide me being criticized for exercising my freedom of speech. Contrary to what JD Vance might think, we have freedom of speech in this country,” he said.
On the economic front, Khan expressed concerns about Trump’s stance on trade tariffs, warning that such policies could harm American businesses operating in London. “London is the top global destination for foreign direct investment, including from leading American firms. Trade wars and tariffs will hurt more than they help,” he cautioned.
Discussing a potential Trump visit, Khan welcomed the idea, stating that it would allow Trump to experience London’s cultural diversity firsthand. “I’d like President Trump to see that diversity is our strength, not a weakness, and that our city thrives on inclusivity and collaboration.”
Additionally, Khan hinted at a more conciliatory approach to Heathrow expansion, a project he previously opposed. While maintaining concerns about noise and environmental impact, he expressed willingness to review Heathrow’s revised plans to address climate change and infrastructure improvements.
Denying any shift in principle, he reaffirmed his dedication to balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility. “I am a pro-growth, pro-business mayor, but any aviation expansion must align with climate commitments,” he stated.
Khan’s evolving stance on key issues highlights his focus on London’s economic prosperity and global engagement, as he seeks to navigate complex political and business landscapes while upholding the city’s values.
