A man who has spent over a decade trying to recover a lost hard drive containing a massive Bitcoin fortune is now taking his most drastic step yet—offering to purchase the landfill where he believes it remains buried before the site is permanently closed.
The hard drive, mistakenly discarded in 2013 during an office cleanup, contains the only access key to a Bitcoin wallet now estimated to be worth around $800 million. Over the years, the man has repeatedly sought permission from local authorities to excavate the landfill, offering to fully fund the search and even share a portion of the recovered funds. However, officials have consistently denied his requests, citing environmental risks and the overwhelming challenge of locating the device within tons of waste.
Determined to reclaim his lost fortune, he has now proposed buying the landfill outright. His plan includes not only searching for the hard drive but also revitalizing the site—either by transforming it into a public park or continuing its operation as a waste management facility.
Despite skepticism from officials, who argue that the chances of recovering the hard drive after more than a decade are extremely slim, the man remains undeterred. Comparing his mission to finding a “needle in a haystack,” he insists that the immense value of the lost Bitcoin justifies every effort.
As the landfill approaches permanent closure, time is running out. Whether this final offer will change the course of his search remains to be seen.
